What a terrible loss

I adore the West Wing and the thing I love about it most is the characters. Each is fantastic and each is different (although none of them seem able to stand still during a conversation). I was very sad when Rob Lowe left the series but I was gutted today to find out that John Spencer a.k.a. Leo McGarry has died. He was only 58.

How very sad and what a terrible loss.

Wow

Tiger

Netherlands sculptor Gideon Adema used a gas burner to put a shine on his tiger [ice] sculpture.

Web Clips in GMail

So it seems that GMail is making a not unexpected forray into RSS.

This afternoon GMail was as normal, this evening I see a cheeky little extra at the top of my posts. It seems that it now incorporates RSS. It's just a little headline at the top of my messages which Google seems to pick from about 20 different 'recommended' feeds so it doesn't feature very heavily but nonetheless it's there.

Interesting, I wonder what will come next?

iTunes

"For a company that's built a reputation on stuff that "just works", this is unbelievable. You're lucky I can't use anyone else's software to put music on my iPod. "

- Jeremy Zawodny

Not just me then? Again, any chance of iPod Ubuntu?

The art to wonderful software lies in making people's lives better without pissing them off. It is remarkable that you can make someone's life better whilst still pissing them off but as Virgin trains will quickly attest, it is nonetheless entirely possible.

If you don't want to build software that pisses people off then you have three choices:
  1. Build software that doesn't make anyone's life better - no-one will use it and no-one will be pissed off
  2. Make absolutely 100% sure that if your software does make life better then it doesn't piss anyone off. Firefox=better living/happy bunnies, Word (v.paper) = better living / angry mob.
  3. Don't build software.
Apple have a devoted army of followers that love them because they build beautiful hardware and software that just works. Carry on like this and they will see more and more of those followers getting lairy. I predict a riot.
